Health Benefits of Riding a Motorcycle

There are a lot of Health Benefits of Riding a Motorcycle. Research has shown that not only are there physical benefits to riding a motorcycle, but there are mental benefits to riding a motorcycle as well.

Tohoku University studied the effects between brain stimulation and riding a motorcycle. Their research showed…

  • Riding a motorcycle activates prefrontal areas of the brain.
  • Differences in brain use and level of brain stimulation can be observed in motorcyclists who ride regularly and in motorcyclists who have not ridden for extended periods.
  •  Incorporating motorcycle riding into daily life improves various cognitive functions and has positive effects on mental and emotional health such as stress reduction.

The research data has also indicated the prefrontal area does not work as much when driving an automobile.

“Riding motorcycles helps keep drivers young by invigorating their brains,” says Ryuta Kawashima, Laboratory of the Department of Functional Brain Imaging, Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer at Tohoku University.

“Mental care is a very big issue in modern society,” said Kawashima. “I think we made an interesting stir here as data showed you can improve your mental condition simply by using motorbikes to commute.”

The research also shows that commuting by car and train increases stress.

This study was the first time the adverse impact of commuting conditions on work settings was documented.

  • Commuting by car & train elevates stress
  • Carpool passengers experience greater stress than carpool drivers
  • Carpooling was more stressful than solo driving
  • Higher traffic congestion directly relates to less control, less control has a relationship to greater stress.
  • Different levels of stress between men & women.
